Overview
Tonota does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on any server. All audio recordings and transcriptions remain on your device at all times.
What data Tonota accesses
| Data | Purpose | Leaves your device? |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone audio | Recording voice memos | No |
| Transcription text | Generated locally, stored in SwiftData | No |
| Audio files | Stored locally in the app sandbox | No |
| Folder names | Optional labels you create to organize memos, stored locally | No |
| Optional export folder | Transcript .txt files and their original audio recordings, written to a folder of your choice on your device or iCloud Drive | No |
If you choose an export folder that is synced by iCloud Drive (or another file provider you have set up), those files will be handled by that service under its own privacy terms. Tonota itself performs no upload — it only writes files to the location you pick.
What Tonota does NOT do
- No user accounts or sign-in
- No analytics or crash reporting to third parties
- No advertising identifiers
- No network requests after the initial model download
- No data shared with Apple or any other party beyond what iOS itself collects
Third-party dependencies
WhisperKit (open-source, MIT licence) runs entirely on-device using Apple's Core ML framework. WhisperKit does not make network calls during inference. Model weights are downloaded once from Hugging Face CDN on first setup; no personal data is included in that request.
mlx-swift-lm (open-source, MIT licence) powers Tonota's on-device AI features — translating, summarizing, extracting to-dos, rewriting, polishing, and any custom instructions you create. It runs entirely on your device and does not send your recordings or transcripts to any server during inference.
Apple Foundation Models is an optional on-device language model provided by Apple as part of Apple Intelligence (available on supported devices). When you choose it as your AI model, the same AI features run locally using Apple's built-in system model — your recordings and transcripts are not uploaded by Tonota. As an Apple system feature, its use is also governed by Apple's own privacy terms for Apple Intelligence.
Your rights
Because Tonota collects no personal data, there is nothing to delete, export, or correct. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored recordings and transcriptions.
