Yes. ELA connects directly to OpenAI's API using your own key, so you pay only for what you use (typically fractions of a cent per request). Your key is stored only in your browser — ELA has no backend server and never sees it. You can get a key at platform.openai.com.
ELA works for any language OpenAI supports, which is most major world languages. The built-in defaults are optimised for English learners and those studying German, French, Japanese, and Spanish — but you can configure the prompts to use any language pair. The TTS feature supports all OpenAI TTS languages.
Only the text you explicitly select and submit to a feature is sent to OpenAI's API — nothing else. ELA does not collect analytics, does not have a server, and does not transmit your API key or browsing history anywhere. Your key is stored locally in Chrome storage on your device only.
ELA itself is completely free and open source. You only pay OpenAI for API usage, which is extremely inexpensive for typical use — a full day of active learning usually costs less than $0.10. TTS is slightly more expensive than text models but still very affordable. You stay in full control of your spending via OpenAI's usage dashboard.
Yes — that's one of ELA's core features. In the settings page you can rewrite the translation prompt, the word lookup prompt, and configure up to 6 fully custom action buttons with your own prompts. Whether you want grammar correction, flashcard generation, or B1-level rewrites, you can build exactly that.
